Whether building low-income, senior-living apartments or elite high-rise condos, there are multiple advantages to using SIPs. Here are 5 of the top reasons to make your next multi-family project a SIPs project.
1. Include Utilities
Planning to offer “Utilities Included” units? If not, maybe you should be. When the complex is build using energy-efficient, highly-insulated Structural Insulated Panels, the savings on utilities is significant. Sandra Bullock, from nonprofit CDPNC, says about their SIPs projects, “We have used SIPs on our last 9 projects and will never go back to conventional framing. There are never problems with the walls not being straight, like we faced in stick frame construction. We also pay all of the utilities on all our SIP projects and we have found great cost savings of power, especially in the summer months.”
2. Build Faster
Large, pre-cut structural panels allow the building envelope to be erected 50% faster, enabling businesses to open sooner. Door and windows are already cut and the insulation step is all but eliminated. Also, as Bullock noted during their construction process, SIPs are also straighter, making it easier and quicker for drywall, doors, windows, and cabinets to be installed. The faster the project is move-in ready, the sooner units can be rented.
3. Avoid Damage
Multi-family housing often means frequent tenant changes, many with small children. SIPs stand up well to the bumps and damage that can occur when families with small children regularly come and go in multifamily housing. On a larger scale, Structural Insulated Panels’ are less prone to fire and storm damage.
4. Increase Comfort
Warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer, ideal controlled indoor environments for building tenants are a big plus of using SIPs. In addition, Structural Insulated Panels are very good for blocking the noise wave lengths of wind, traffic, and other ambient noises that can quite clearly be heard through the walls of a conventionally framed structure, ensuring a quieter living and sleeping environment. Additionally, recent testing shows that our panels can be easily used to create soundproofing on interior walls, giving the option to protect against unwanted noise transmission between units. In fact, when using SIPs to achieve a 1-hour UL Fire Rating, a sound rating of up to STC 59 is a wonderful side-effect!
5. Live Healthier
Superior indoor air quality with reduced infiltration of outside pollutants can greatly benefit everyone, especially those with respiratory ailments or allergies. Traditionally built structures often use fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass, because of its porous nature, effectively traps dirt and dust. (DYK: When fiberglass gets dirty, it insulates less effectively, so the dirtier it becomes, the lower the R-value.) Air can circulate through your walls, dislodging dust and allergens, blowing them throughout your home. Conventional fiberglass insulation also does not resist moisture and condensation well. Moistures inside your fiberglass-insulated walls can lead to mold growth, which can also contribute to worsening allergies and respiratory conditions. Avoid these potential health hazards by building with Structural Insulated Panels. SIPs insulating foam core eliminates the need for fiberglass insulation and is too dense to allow dirt, mold and other allergens to take hold.
If you are looking to save money on utility bills, provides a better living environment or simply get the project the done quickly and smoothly, SIPs is the way to go.
